Summer Meal Sites

Altoona Kids Café, Des Moines, Saydel, West Des Moines School Districts provide summer meal sites for students! The information provided below gives details about each provider if you are interested in utilizing these. 

Altoona Kids Café Summer 2017

The date is set and we are gearing up for an AWESOME summer! Join us for Altoona Kids Cafe 2017 from June 12-July 21, Monday through Friday from 10:30 am-12:30 pm, with lunch being served every day at noon. Kids Cafe will be located at Cross Creek this year (the building just west of Lutheran Church of the Cross). Students are asked to pre-register this year. Students must be enrolled to attend. If you are interested in enrolling your student, please contact your school's guidance counselor by June 2, 2016.

Des Moines Summer Meal Program

The Des Moines Public School District is once again sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program, with sites providing free meals to all children 18 years of age or younger beginning as early as June 5, 2017.

There are a total of 31 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch; 26 of those sites will also provide breakfast.

The school district has been sponsoring a summer meal program for more than 30 years. Funding for the program is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2016, the school district served children 47,000 breakfasts and almost 100,000 lunches during summer break.

No meals are served on July 4, 2017. Please pay close attention to start and end dates for each site.

Participation factors may result in some sites closing earlier than anticipated.  Check with the site nearest you for details or call the Food & Nutrition Management Office at 242-7636.

Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact the USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339 or (800) 845-6136 (Spanish).

 

West Des Moines Summer Meal Program

The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Nutrition Services Department is working with West Des Moines Parks and Recreation, West Des Moines Human Services and Walnut Creek YMCA to offer a Summer Food Service Program from June 6 to Aug. 11, 2017. Meals will be provided to all children 18 or younger without charge; adults may pay $2 for breakfast or $3.50 for lunch. The meals will be provided Monday through Friday, on a first come, first served basis.

  • Legion Park, corner of 4th Street and Vine Street, West Des Moines (Closed July 4)
    • Lunch: 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Stilwell Junior High, 1601 Vine St., West Des Moines Closed July 3 and 4)
    • Breakfast: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
    • Lunch: 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • Valley High School, 3650 Woodland Ave., West Des Moines (closed July 3 and 4)
    • Breakfast: 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
    • Lunch: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Walnut Creek YMCA, 948 73rd Street, Windsor Heights (Closed July 4)
    • Breakfast: 7:45 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.
    • Lunch:  11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
  • Crestview School of Inquiry, 8355 Franklin Ave., Clive (Closed July 3 and 4)
    • Breakfast: 7:45-8:45 a.m.
    • Lunch: 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • Hillside Elementary, 713 8th St., West Des Moines (Closed July 3 and 4)
    • Breakfast: 7:45-8:45 a.m.
    • Lunch: 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m

Saydel Summer Meal Program

Saydel Community School District is sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program with sites providing free meals to all 18 years of age or younger as early as June 5, 2017.  There is a total of 3 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch, Cornell Elementary will also provide breakfast.  Funding for the program is provided through the US Department of Agriculture.  Participation factors may result in some sites closing earlier than anticipated.  Check with the site nearest you for details of call the Food & Nutrition office at 264-0866. http://www.saydel.k12.ia.us/district/SummerMeals.cfm
