Highlights from the April 4, 2019 Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

  • The board set the date of the public hearing on April 18, 2019, for security enhancements to entrances to all elementary buildings.
  • The board approved the resolution authorizing the redemption of general obligation school refunding bonds.
  • The board set the date of the public hearing for the fiscal year 2020 budget for April 15, 2019.
  • The board approved the purchase of three regular 77 passenger school buses without air conditioning from International/Hoglund totaling $302,250 and one special needs equipped bus with air conditioning from Thomas Bus Sales totaling $110,518.
  • The board approved the 2019-2020 staffing plan.


  • Pleasant Hill City Manager, Benjamin Champ, shared information about The City of Pleasant Hill’s desires to annex properties in the Rising Sun area including property owned by the District at 6770 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill.
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, shared additional 2020 budget recommendations and discussions with the board.
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, provided information on district fees. The District charges student-related fees in accordance with an annual fee schedule approved by the Board.
    • Some fees are required while other fees are optional.
    • There are two proposed changes at this time for the Seal of Biliteracy testing fee and the activities pass fee. 
    • Meal prices for next year have not been established as of this date. We are currently waiting on guidance from the Department of Education as to whether the previously used PLE tool will still be applicable for the next school year.
    • Proposed schedule of student-related fees.
  • Gary Haines, Director of Buildings and Grounds, presented the new electronic maintenance ticketing system.
  • Mattia Hansen, Community Relations Coordinator, provided an update on Communication Department functions and achievements.
