Highlights from the February 7, 2019 Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

  • The board approved the various policies listed as a second read.
  • The board approved the submission of the grant requests for Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino Community Betterment Grant Program and the accompanying board resolution found at the place setting of the board president.


  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, The Executive Director of Business Services provided the Board with a 5-year budget and property tax projection model based on certain assumptions presented at the meeting.
  • Dr. Halupnik, Southeast Polk Superintendent, provided information that the City of Altoona has a new subdivision called Country Cove Park located just off of 17th Street SE and West of the Spring Creek soccer complex in Altoona. The subdivision currently has some lots in the Centennial Elementary attendance area and some in the Clay Elementary attendance area and some lots split between the two.  A discussion was necessary to determine where to draw the lines in this new subdivision so we do not have the boundary crossing parcels.
  • Board members Adam Krell, Tom Naeve and Gary Fisher along with Dr. Halupnik, Southeast Polk Superintendent provided an overview of their experience at the Iowa Association of School Boards Day on the Hill.
  • Dr. Latham, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, provided information about the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress.
  • Dr. Latham, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, provided an update on preschool enrollment trends.
