Highlights from the January 23, 2020, Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

Approvals

  • The Board of Education approved the following upcoming meetings: 
    • January 30, 2020 – building visit @ Altoona Elementary
    • February 6, 2020 – board meeting
    • February 20, 2020 – board meeting
    • February 27, 2020 – building visit @ Southeast Polk Junior High
  • The Board approved increasing substitute teacher pay from $125 per day to $135 per day. 
  • The Board offered its endorsement of a grant proposal to the SEP Education Foundation for recruiting and hiring teachers.
  • The Board set the date of the public hearing on February 20, 2020, for the High School, Junior High, and Altoona Elementary Roof Project.
  • The Board approved Shive-Hattery, Inc. as the architect/engineer firm to manage the High School, Junior High, and Altoona Elementary School Roof Project.
  • The board approved the agreement with Iowa Demolition to demolish the building structures located at 6770 NE Rising Sun Drive in Pleasant Hill.
  • The Board approved the application to the SBRC for spending authority in the amount of $2,582 for special education administrator costs for students enrolled in the Grandwood Education Center.

Presentations/Discussions:

  • Stephen Pettit, high school principal, and assistant principals John Steffen and Scott Belger provided an update on the continued progress of becoming a High Reliability School. 
  • Dr. Dirk Halupnik, Superintendent, shared his monthly report
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, provided the monthly financial report
  • Dr. JoEllen Latham, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, shared an update on district professional learning day that took place on January 20. 
  • Gary Haines, Director of Buildings and Grounds, provided an update on projects taking place around the district. 
  • Joseph Horton, Associate Superintendent, presented the proposals for the Prairie Meadows Betterment Grants.
