Highlights from the May 2, 2019 Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

Approvals:

  • The board approved the increase of 2% of salaries/wages package to Administrators and Other Professional Staff for the fiscal year 2020.
  • The board set the public hearing date for May 16, 2019, for consideration of the permanent easement for the City of Altoona on District property located at 3200 1st Avenue S., Altoona.
  • The board set the public hearing date for May 16, 2019, for consideration of the permanent easement for the City of Pleasant Hill on District property located at 6770 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill.
  • The board set the public hearing date for May 16, 2019, for consideration of the temporary construction easement for the City of Pleasant Hill on District property located at 6770 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill.

Presentations/Discussions:

  • Dr. Dirk Halupnik, Southeast Polk Superintendent, recognized and thanked the Southeast Polk School Board members for their service. The Iowa Association of School Boards has designated May as School Board Recognition Month, this year recognizing these ‘Superheroes for Public Education.’ As citizen leaders, Southeast Polk board members face complex and demanding challenges.
  • Matt Eddy, Agriculture Teacher/FFA, and two Southeast Polk High School students presented on the recent FFA China Trip.
  • Jamie Gilchrist, Technology Integration Coordinator, demonstrated Google Expedition, a virtual reality teaching and learning tool being used to support units of study in our buildings.
  • Joseph Horton, Associate Superintendent, shared information on the discussions about the SEPA contract extension and asked for feedback from the board members.
