Highlights from the November 21, 2019, Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

**These are highlights and should not be considered official minutes**


  • School Board elections took place on November 5, 2019. Seven candidates were seeking one of four open seats. Election results ended with the following individuals (listed below in alphabetical order) receiving the top four vote totals. During the annual meeting, the outgoing Board accepted the Abstract of Votes to formally recognize the certification and the newly elected Board members.
    • Chad Crabb
    • Brett Handy
    • Tom Naeve
    • Lori Slings

The Board Secretary presented the Oath of Office to Elected Board Members. 

During the annual meeting of the Board, a president and vice-president were elected. Nominations were made for president and vice president and once the voting concluded, the oath of office was administered for each officer.

Gary Fischer was elected President. 

Tom Naeve was elected Vice President.


  • The Board of Education approved the next meeting date for December 12, 2019.
  • The Tom Naeve was appointed to the Southeast Polk District Advisory Committee.
  • Adam Krell was selected as the representative to participate on the Board Policy Committee.
  • The Board of Education approved to again offer early retirement benefits to classified and certified employees who qualify, and for the second year in a row, offer the early bird incentive for those classified and certified employees who submit all completed paperwork on or before January 2, 2020. 
  • The board approved the 2020-2021 High School Registration Guide.
  • The board approved the list of early graduates.  
  • The Board approved the revised Phase V capital projects list with projects to begin as noted: Administration recommends immediately moving forward with certain Phase V projects including roof repairs, Safety/Security Infrastructure Updates, LED lighting at Mitchellville Elementary School, and parking lot repairs at Spring Creek and the Junior High. Discussions will need to be held with the Board to determine funding opportunities for the remaining projects.
  • The board set a public hearing on January 9, 2020, to discuss the school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. 
  • The Board approved the purchase of meal service lines for Mitchellville, Runnells, and Willowbrook Elementary Schools from TriMark Hockenbergs for a total of $59,169.15.


  • Dr. Dirk Halupnik, Southeast Polk Superintendent, provided his monthly update
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, presented the monthly financials.
  • Dr. JoEllen Latham, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, shared the results of the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) for Southeast Polk.
