Caring Hands Outreach Center is a collaborative effort of churches and community organizations in the Southeast Polk region of Central Iowa, providing food, clothing, and household items to those in need. *Donations are accepted during hours of operation listed below.

Caring Hands Food Pantry – offers the choice of food, personal care, cleaning items, and limited help with rent/utilities.
Clothes Hanger – offers infant through adults size clothes and small household goods at no cost.
Shop with a Cop is a program where with limited financial resources have an opportunity to go on a shopping trip with an officer during the holiday season.
Altoona Kids Cafe is a Summer Food Service Program that provides summer lunches to students who reside within the Southeast Polk School District. If you are interested in lending a hand or joining them for lunch, please contact us.
Location: Cross Cafe located inside Lutheran Church of the Cross, in Altoona.
Lunch Offerings: They will serve lunch Monday through Friday, 11:30-12:30 pm from June 12 until July 21.
Des Moines Summer Meal Program – The Des Moines Public School District is once again sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program, with sites providing free meals to all children 18 years of age or younger beginning as early as June 5, 2017. No meals are served on July 4, 2017. Please pay close attention to start and end dates for each site.
There is a total of 31 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch; 26 of those sites will also provide breakfast. The school district has been sponsoring a summer meal program for more than 30 years. Funding for the program is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2016, the school district served children 47,000 breakfasts and almost 100,000 lunches during summer break.

Participation factors may result in some sites closing earlier than anticipated. Check with the site nearest you for details or call the Food & Nutrition Management Office at 242-7636. West Des Moines Summer Meal Program – The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Nutrition Services Department is working with West Des Moines Parks and Recreation, West Des Moines Human Services and Walnut Creek YMCA to offer a Summer Food Service Program from June 6 to Aug. 11, 2017. Meals will be provided to all children 18 or younger without charge; adults may pay $2 for breakfast or $3.50 for lunch. The meals will be provided Monday through Friday, on a first come, first served basis.
Saydel Summer Meal Program – The Saydel Community School District is sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program with sites providing free meals to all 18 years of age or younger as early as June 5, 2017. There is a total of 3 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch, Cornell Elementary will also provide breakfast. Funding for the program is provided through the US Department of Agriculture. Participation factors may result in some sites closing earlier than anticipated.
