Although we don’t provide a summer meal program, Altoona Kids Café, Des Moines, Saydel, Waukee, Johnston and West Des Moines School districts do.  The information provided below gives details about each provider.

Altoona Kids Café Summer 2018

Kids CafeThe date is set and we are gearing up for an AWESOME summer! Join us for Altoona Kids Cafe 2018 from June 11- July 20, (closed July 4),  Monday through Friday from 10:30 am-12:30 pm, with lunch being served every day starting at 11:40 am.

Kids Cafe is a FREE USDA Summer Food Service Program that provides delicious, healthy meals and learning and enrichment activities to youth 18 years and younger.

Kids Cafe is located at the Cross Creek building, 1975 8th Street SW, Altoona, IA 50009. Students are required to pre-register before attending.

Des Moines Summer Meal Program

The Des Moines Public School district is once again sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program, with sites providing free meals to all children 18 years of age or younger beginning June 4, 2018. The school district has been sponsoring a summer meal program for more than 30 years. Funding for the program is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2017, the school district served children 47,000 breakfasts and almost 100,000 lunches during summer break. There are a total of 31 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch; 26 of those sites will also provide breakfast.
No meals are served the week of July 4, 2018. Please pay close attention to start and end dates for each site.

Waukee Schools Picnic & Play

Come join your teachers at five sites across Waukee and West Des Moines for fun, games, and lunch!  Activities and lunch will be available every Monday through Friday (excluding July 4).  The fun will start June 4 and go until August 10. All activities and meals are free to children 18 years old and younger who visit the site.  Children will not be identified and do not need to sign in in order to participate in activities or receive lunch.

Join us for free breakfast and lunch! FREE to all children and teens 18 years or younger. Adults may purchase meals (Breakfast $2.00/Lunch $3.75). No identification or registration required. All sites will be closed July 4.

Saydel Summer Meal Program

Saydel Community School District is once again sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program with sites providing free meals to all children 18 years of age or younger starting June 4, 2018 until August 10, 2018.  There is a total of 10 meal sites throughout the community that will provide lunch. Cornell elementary will provide hot breakfast and lunch.  Funding for the program is provided through the US Department of Agriculture. In 2017, the school district served children 6,034 breakfasts and 16,332 lunches during the summer. Check with the site nearest you for details or call the Food & Nutrition office at 264-0866. Note: No meals will be served July 4, 2018.
