Preparing students for civic life is part of our district’s vision and mission: Success for college, career, and civic life. SCIP Day is a powerful example of that mission in action.

SCIP Day, which stands for Senior Community Improvement Project, is a long-standing Southeast Polk tradition that sends hundreds of Southeast Polk High School Seniors out into the community for a morning of meaningful service. Partner organizations share their needs, and our students step up, whether it’s cleaning, painting, landscaping, picking up trash, or simply brightening someone’s day through connection and kindness.

This year, students made an impact across the district at locations including Yellow Banks Park, Runnells Park, Mitchellville City Park, Prairie Vista Village, Townsend Community Center, the Aquatic Center, Copper Shores Village, Copper Creek Golf Course, Copper Creek Lake Park, Caring Hands, the Altoona Campus, Altoona walking trails, the Altoona Dog Park, Altoona Nursing Home, and several SEP elementary schools. At Yellow Banks, students worked hard to clear invasive trees and brush, helping prepare the space for a natural prairie. At Copper Shores Village, they delivered May baskets, spreading joy and smiles to residents. At many other sites, teams focused on beautification efforts like trash pickup and general upkeep.

After a morning of service, students gathered at Thomas Mitchell Park to celebrate their work and spend time together. A highlight of the day, as always, was lunch generously provided by the Altoona Lions Club, with additional support from Hy-Vee. Their continued partnership helps make this day both rewarding and memorable for our students.

SCIP Day is more than just a tradition – it’s a hands-on opportunity for students to give back, connect with their community, and experience the value of service firsthand. Mission accomplished.
