SEP staff leading the way in conservation education!

Southeast Polk staff members recently shared their expertise at the Iowa Conservation Education Coalition (ICEC) Winter Workshop 2026, held at the Kirkwood Community College Horticulture Building.

The workshop brought together classroom teachers and informal environmental educators from across Iowa who are committed to conservation and place-based environmental education. Through panel discussions and breakout sessions, participants explored innovative strategies for integrating local environmental themes into everyday teaching.

Danielle Hoenig, Southeast Polk High School Biology and Environmental Science teacher, presented a breakout session titled “Beyond the Classroom: Strategies for Meaningful Outdoor Learning Experiences.” Her session focused on practical ways educators can create meaningful, hands-on outdoor learning opportunities that connect students to their local environment.

In addition, Jim Pifer, Southeast Polk’s PK-12 Science Coordinator, helped plan and organize the workshop and participated as a board member of the Iowa Conservation Education Coalition.

We are proud of our staff for not only engaging in professional learning but also for leading it. Their commitment to conservation education and collaboration continues to positively impact students and educators across Iowa.
