Highlights from the June 11, 2020, Southeast Polk Board of Education Meeting

Approvals

  • The Board approved the next Board Meeting date of July 16, 2020. 
  • The Board approved the purchase of 1,625 HP G3 X360 Chromebooks from Firefly Computers in the amount of $468,000. This project will be paid for using PPEL funds.
  • The Board approved the Proposed Schedule of Student-Related Fees for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved the 2020-2021 Student Handbooks.
  • The Board approved the agreement with the Greater Altoona Community Service Campus for the Kids Klub program for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved the 1-year extension with Anderson Erickson Dairy using the escalator pricing during the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved Pan-O-Gold as the Bread supplier during the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved a 1-year renewal contract with Martin Bro’s Distributing for Food & Supplies, EMS Detergent Services for Chemicals, and  Loffredo Fresh Produce Co. for Produce for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved the renewal of contract with General Parts LLC for Preventative Maintenance and Service for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The Board approved the inter-fund transfer from the Food Service Fund to the General Fund for the lesser of the indirect cost amount or the actual amount of the identified administrative costs in the Food & Nutrition Department. Maximum amount of $141,680.06.

Presentations/Discussions:

  • Dr. Dirk Halupnik, Superintendent, provided his monthly update highlighting:
    • 2020 Graduates – still planning towards an outdoors commencement on July 18, details to come
    • Summer Sports – first home varsity game is July 19
    • Senior Student Fees – covered by a donation from local business 
    • Continuous Learning Survey – sent to all families, staff – receiving feedback
    • Return to Learn plan – continue to work on
    • SEP Senior Rep Mariah Kacer – Recognized and thanked her for her service
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, provided his May financial update.
    • Auditors beginning their work
    • HVAC break-fix insurance program 2020-2021
    • Continuing with plans for bond election on September 8, 2020, for capital projects
  • Kevin Baccam,  Executive Director of Business Services, provided an update on the 2020-2021 student fee changes. 
  • Dr. Dirk Halupnik, Superintendent, regarding the FY2021 Legislative Advocacy, shared the IASP Legislative Beliefs and requested the Board’s recommendations for our top 4 Legislative Priorities
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, recommended we continue with SherryLynn Photography for team photos
  • Steve Stotts, Altoona Elementary Principal, shared that the Altoona Care Center has requested to use Altoona Elementary gyms in emergency situations, as a temporary location until they can move to a new location/care site that could house them. 
  • Kevin Baccam, Executive Director of Business Services, recommended that we transition to one consolidated vendor, Jostens, for both school pictures and yearbooks.
