Southeast Polk Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Jo Ellen Latham, was the 2019 recipient of the University of Northern Iowa’s Educational Leadership Legacy Award. 

This award is presented annually to an alum of the UNI principalship, superintendency or doctoral programs who exemplifies the program’s core values of leadership in learning, service and change. 

Members of the Teaching and Learning team shared, “Jo Ellen is a champion for all things teaching and learning in our district and across the state. People look to her for guidance but she also lifts them up and pushes them so she is constantly building capacity.  Jo Ellen is a visionary leader who is talented in leading educators through the challenges of teaching and learning to a place of self efficacy. She is humble, inspirational, brilliant and kind. She is honest yet eloquent and always values people over programs. Her love of continuous learning and professional growth is contagious to everyone who meets her.” 

Dr. Latham shared, “It is an honor to be recognized by an institution that has played such a significant role in supporting my learning and pathways in education.”

Dr. Latham is committed to preparing all students at Southeast Polk for success in college, career and civic life and we are proud of her accomplishments. Congratulations Dr. Latham!
