A huge thank you to the Altoona Flying J Travel Center for your recent donation!  The newly remodeled Flying J’s $10,000 donation was used to purchase programmable robots called Sphero Indi bot kits for every elementary building. The Indi teaches students programming and coding in a fun and engaging way.

This donation has allowed us to kickstart our inclusion of computer science in all 8 of our elementary buildings. Not only is computer science becoming an important concept for students to learn about but also allows us to teach valuable skills like communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. Our purchase of Indi robots through Flying J’s generous donation gives our students a physical object to learn these valuable life skills.

“Indi is already in high demand by our teachers for students to use.  We can’t wait to see what Southeast Polk elementary students are able to do with these robots this school year!” shared Jamie Gilchrist, Southeast Polk’s PK-12 Technology Integration Coordinator.

Thanks again to Flying J representatives, Don Plew, Altoona Flying J General Manager, Patti Petry, Division Food Operations Manager. Raymond Kern (Altoona Flying J Deli Manager and Martha Houser Urbandale Pilot General Manager.

“We love giving back to our community. This is just a small way we can.” shared Patti Petry.

It has already made a big impact!
