Standards-Based Learning

Grading & Reporting for Southeast Polk Community School District Students

Southeast Polk uses standards-based grading (SBG) to provide a clear, accurate picture of student learning. Unlike traditional grading, SBG measures progress toward specific learning standards, offering meaningful feedback on strengths and areas for growth. This approach ensures grades reflect true learning and help guide students toward success.

The purpose of grades at Southeast Polk is to:

  • Communicate a student’s level of academic proficiency on district learning standards to students, parents, and others
  • Provide information for students for self-evaluation and reflection
  • Provide feedback on instructional effectiveness
  • Provide data for educational paths and programs
  • Grades are a reflection of learning only
  • Feedback is critical for student learning
  • Students should have multiple attempts to demonstrate learning
  • New information about learning replaces old information
  • Communication and consistency are crucial
  • Exceeding: Demonstrates learning beyond the level of the standard (4)
  • Meeting: Demonstrates learning at the level of the standard (3)
  • Approaching: Demonstrates partial learning at the level of the standard (2)
  • Beginning: Demonstrates initial learning at the level of the standard (1)
