A new Iowa law (House File 2591), taking effect August 1, 2026, allows 8th-grade students to participate in high school sports under specific circumstances.

In response, the Southeast Polk Board of Education has established local guidelines focused on doing what is right for students and athletic programs. These guidelines apply exclusively to sports sanctioned by the IGHSAU and IHSAA. Participation is not permitted for any other activities or sports at this time.

The district’s philosophy is straightforward: moving an 8th grader up to a high school team should be a rare, exceptional occurrence reserved for students who are ready to be genuine varsity contributors. Southeast Polk remains fully committed to maintaining strong and standalone junior high sports programs. High school teams will not pull 8th graders up simply to fill out rosters or lower-level squads.

This process is initiated by coaches, not families.

If a varsity head coach identifies a student, they will begin the approval process. A student cannot attend high school practices or games until signed approvals are collected from the Junior High Athletic Director, the parent or guardian, and the High School Principal/Activities Director.

How this affects current high schoolers:

Because this is reserved for exceptional varsity readiness, this is not a roster expansion. The district does not expect it to change opportunities for current 9th through 12th-grade athletes.

If an 8th-grade student is identified by a coach:

Here are the key details to keep in mind:

• It’s a full-season decision: An 8th grader who plays on a high school team cannot play on the 8th-grade team for that same sport. Once on the high school roster, the decision is final for the season, and students cannot switch back mid-season.

• Code of Conduct: Students will follow the High School Student Code of Conduct for the rest of their time in the district, though they will keep 8th-grade academic eligibility standards while in middle school.

• Playing time isn’t guaranteed: Being on the roster guarantees team membership, but playing time, starting spots, and game action remain entirely at the discretion of the varsity coaching staff.

• High school eligibility stays intact: Playing as an 8th grader does not count against a student’s four years of high school eligibility. Students still retain their full eight consecutive semesters once they enter 9th grade.

• Transfer rules apply: Changing high schools later on could trigger the state’s 140-calendar-day varsity ineligibility rule.
